Alternative Seating to Support Academically Struggling Middle Schoolers
My students need alternative seating to better fit their learning styles. As middle schools with academic struggles, they focus better when they aren't forced to sit in a hard chair all day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Through my decade of teaching, I have learned the power of choice seating, especially with students who struggle academically. My school is a bilingual school, so students learned half their subjects in English and the other half of their subjects in their immersion language until 4th grade. Because of this, these students struggle academically and tend to have more extreme behavioral needs.
In addition, my school is in the heart of Aurora; a diverse community, both culturally and socioeconomically.
My students come from all over the world and have had varying life experiences. They are amazing kids with a ton of drive and a fun loving sense of humor.
My Project
Middle school students are already funny beings. They are growing, they are hormonal, they are opinionated, and they want to explore. My middle school students are also bilingual, which in the long term will be amazing for them, but currently, that has put them behind their peers at other schools. I have noticed in my work that giving students of any age a variety of seating options gives them a space to move and be comfortable so their eager brains can focus on the more important stuff - learning.
I currently have four large plastic IKEA chairs and the students rotate sitting in those.
My most struggling students focus so much more when they are able to sit in those seats. As well, I have floor cushions and they are more attentive and engaged when they can lay on their bellies on those.
