My students need alternative seating such as the lap desks, the exercise balance stability disc, and plastic stack stools to use instead of traditional student desks and chairs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading is the key to learning. Reading happens in everything that we do. I have a unique experience to teach students from diverse backgrounds, such as language learners, students with special needs, and students with differing economic levels. My third grade students read anywhere from a first grade level to a middle school level. It is imperative to meet students where they are at and help them achieve more than one year of gain. I take the starting place of every student and build on their strengths in order to tackle their weaknesses.
Many of my students have high energy and they need places where they can focus.
Every single one of my students' parents are doing the best they can with what they have. That being said, students come with differing levels of experience. It is my job to make sure that students come to a safe and comfortable environment so that they can focus on the job of reading. Making the classroom feel like a home has always been my focus and is imperative for student to learn.
My Project
I have the wonderful opportunity to teach reading to amazing third graders. However, I had this epiphany! How can I expect third graders to read at a desk with a hard plastic chair when I never do that at home. I prefer to read on a couch with a pillow.
Often students do not get a lot of choice throughout their day.
Yet research says that students motivation increases when they are given choice in their learning. Alternative seating will not only give those students motivation in being able to choose where they are comfortable, it will also allow them to focus and achieve higher academic performance by using up excess energy.
I have used some alternative seating in my classroom with clipboards, rockers, and pillows. With just those few items in my classroom last year I have seen my students motivation increase. Stability balls, more rockers, stability discs, and kneeling mats will give students ways to use up excess energy and will give them the motivation they need.
