Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Resource teacher in Special Education with amazing students who struggle with learning. We work in a small quiet learning environment but the students need alternative tools to help them focus and remain attentive. They struggle with academics but they shouldn’t have to struggle trying to keep still when they have a need for movement.
The typical school setting is not always beneficial for students who are active, energetic and/or kinesthetic learners.
Sitting still in the classroom can be difficult for many of my students. They are creatively trying to satisfy their need for movement, such as balancing the chair on two legs or propping the chair on something to make it rock back and forth. I want them to sit comfortably and safely!
My Project
I want my students to have alternative seating to provide a comfortable environment that addresses their varying needs for movement. We have inflatable seating discs. These work for some of my students, but they don’t work for everyone. My students deserve more options.
I hope that these tools will help them feel valued and understood.
The students need alternative seating options to avoid unsafe use of standard chairs. A safe way for my students to achieve the movement they need is to have additional seating options with Balance Balls, Wobble chairs, and Bouncy bands. These will provide some tools for them to keep their attention on their learning without the distractions of restrictive seating.
