Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher, in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with multiple opportunities for success. Often times students who are "behaviorally challenged" are unable to access information that is available because their behaviors get in the way. These students are often over looked and put to the side instead of meeting their needs head on and providing strategies that are effective.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
Often my students inability to remain focused for extended periods of time interfere with them obtaining the information that is provided to them. Movement is a huge piece that needs to be addressed first before we can pave the way for information to be accessed.
These chairs will allow my students to move all the while staying seated and in one location and not disrupting the learning environment of others.
This is important because students with ADD and ADHD need movement in order for their brains to allow them focus on information. These wobble chairs and plastic ball chair will allow silent movement in the classroom.
