Alternative Seating Options for Mrs. Brown's Classroom
My students need alternate seating other than traditional desks where they can choose their seating option that suits them best such as wiggle seats (rocker cushions), balance balls, portable lap desks, fidgety feet bands, and more.
My class in the fall of 2018 will consist of approximately 15 boys and girls aged 8 or 9 years old with a range of abilities. The method and environment in which they learn best will vary greatly. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
We are located in Western New York in a rural setting seated between several hills.
Many of our families struggle to put food on the table and utilize the local food pantry for assistance. The food pantry also supplies school supplies for many of our children as well as clothing.
I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
My students will be able to choose the seating option that works best for them. Often my students work on collaborative projects with a partner or partners. This will give them many more option of places to sit around the room with the stools, kids floor seats, and portable lap desks. Many of these seating options such as the balance cushions, wobble chair, and balance balls will keep their brains and bodies active while keeping them engaged in learning. While working, students will burn more calories, use up excess energy, and increase motivation & engagement. The balance balls, wobble chair, and balance cushions help students focus by promoting core strength, coordination, and balance because they're able to wiggle, bounce, and rock in non-disruptive ways.
