I work in a special education classroom. I work amazing students that are on the autism spectrum. Each one of my kids learn and see the world in a very different way. I love to watch them grow and figure out life. We spend a great deal of time not only learning academics but learning how to socialize, proper coping mechanisms, and how to learn skills that come so naturally to most people. The best thing about my class is the love. The kids will tell you that we are a family in my room. We laugh daily, we work hard, and we take care of each other. I am so lucky to be in my first year of teaching and be blessed with a group of kids just filled with passion and personality.
Our class has a full spectrum of learning styles which means we need a variety of tools to help us get through the day.
I have a created an area for calming down, each student has a cubby, and we have a couple cushions. However, what we really need is alternatives to regular seating. Many of my students find regular chairs problematic which distracts their learning.
My Project
Working in a Autism classroom requires many different tools and zones to help my children feel secure and focused. Alternative seating is designed to help children feel more comfortable in their environment. Wobble seats help with jitters, bouncing helps with sensory and motor skills, and bean bags are great for helping students feel surrounded and secure. These students each have a unique set of personality traits that leave them often moving, standing, or sitting on some sort of cushion. We also have 4 broken regular chairs in our room that often frustrated them. My goal is to create a space where my students feel empowered and where their differences are celebrated.
