Ms. Ventura from Maple Heights OH is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need this spacious, octagon activity table and these individual rocking chairs!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our scholars are 100% on free breakfast and free lunch. For many of our scholars this is the only place they receive a healthy meal. Many of scholar come from single family households without the means to always be able to prepare their students with the necessary school supplies for the year. Many of our scholars have experiences indescribable hardships and come to school as a safe-haven for their personal struggles. Often some scholars have to walk through areas of violence to and from school. Despite these hardships, we believe that our scholars deserve the best educational experience and that we need to work together (Families, Schools, and the Community) to provide our scholars with the skills necessary to have the most opportunities to thrive. Many students have trouble focusing when asked to sit and work for an extended period of time. This is especially troublesome when students are sitting in broken, worn out chairs. Offering various seating options can ultimately increase student success rates in the classroom!
Students spend the majority of their days at school sitting for extended periods of time in uncomfortable chairs with little to no wiggle room. These settings are often not conducive to students' needs and can result in lower academic achievement (Merritt, 2014). In my new and improved classroom with alternative seating, students will have the opportunity to choose between multiple styles of seating such as a large octagon activity table and individual rocking chairs! With the support of the community, I hope to add even more seating options in the future such as high-standing tables with stools, low-sitting tables with cushions, and even a futon! Providing students with multiple seating options allows students to learn in the environment most comfortable to them.
With gratitude,
Miss V.
