My school is a Title I school, which means due to the low socioeconomic status of the students, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We have a high Hispanic population as well as a high transient rate. Due to the low incomes and frequent relocations, many students struggle with focus and academic success. They need additional supports to feel a sense of belonging and to feel comfortable enough to let outside worries go so they can focus on academics.
"Are you a pen-clicker? A hair-twirler? A knee-bouncer? Did you ever get in trouble for fidgeting in class? Don't hang your head in shame. All that movement may be helping you think." Anya Kamenetz.
By allowing my students to choose seating that is specific to their needs, I am giving them the ability to choose what is best for them.
Children are naturally different and diverse, and just like one-size education doesn't fit all, neither do chairs. Middle school students are hard to engage and giving them seating options allows them to make choices that fit their needs so they feel more comfortable which helps them engage.
