My Students

I work at a Title I school which is one of the lowest income schools in the district. 100% of our students qualify to receive free lunch. I teach second grade with a diverse student population. Our students love to work hard to learn and they are always asking questions. A lot of our students show great leadership skills in the making.

I have 20 students of different religions, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds.

They have different learning needs, behaviors and abilities. The community that they live in is very impoverished. My goal is to make school a great place to learn and motivate them to want to come to school.

My Project

I am asking for multiple different sensory items from alternative seating to calming items to help improve students learning stamina. My students were in Kinder half the year before COVID; then, they were at home all last year. This means these students have never really learned how to sit still. All the options I am asking for are to give them the freedom of movement in a proactive way.

These students need all the support in the classroom and having open seating options other than a table will help improve their learning and help grow their minds.

My students are having such a hard time sitting still and many have ADHD or are showing signs of the backslide of learning from home. This means they do not have self-regulation or control when it comes to a classroom setting. I have noticed that they could benefit from a calming activity center with sensory items for when they need a break to get control over their emotions. Not only that, they have not had to sit and learn since Kinder. I have many students who cannot sit still at a desk and have asked to sit on the floor or stand.

Students will get to try all the sitting tool options and I will watch to see which seating option they are most successful at and then place them accordingly throughout the year. The calming sensory station will be open for students at any time
