My first grade class consists of twenty-one students who love to learn. Each morning, I am greeted with big, bright (and, at times, toothless) grins. The students are not only highly motivated to learn and grow, but are very caring and respectful of each other's feelings. As a class, time is spent fostering a sense of community within the classroom. Developing a strong classroom community is important to us, as it helps us become productive citizens as we grow. Learning compassion, patience, and respect are certainly valuable lessons that go hand in hand with academic excellence.
My Project
Flexible seating is important in the classroom. The stools that we are requesting are the perfect choice for my students. Children need to move. The stools we are seeking allow the students to wobble and rock, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
Research has shown that utilizing alternative seating in the classroom can burn calories, use up excess energy, improve metabolism, increase motivation and engagement, create a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improve core strength and overall posture.
Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
