My students come from a very diverse background. Some are from military families, constantly on the move every few years and trying to find some semblance of stability and make their way through a new situation. Some students come from low income housing and they are trying to be the first from their family to go to and graduate college. Others are just new to this country and trying to learn a new language and culture.
Regardless, we're like a family here, always supportive of each other and pushing each other to be more.
We see our diversity as a strength because that means we all have something different to contribute and we all have something we can learn from each other. My students all have different challenges but they're all striving for the same goals, an education and the bright future it affords.
My Project
My students are at an age where they are very active and like to move around or not comfortable doing work while sitting in a chair. They like sitting outside the door, standing by their desk, or even lying on the ground to do their work.
So I want to give my students choices in how and where they work.
Right now some students enjoy having the choice of where to sit to work. I brought in some beach chairs and some office chairs into my room. To further expand the options available in my room I want to request carpets so they can sit on the floor or even lie down and work.
Some have already started doing this but they're not very comfortable. Others have expressed interest in doing this but they want carpets so it will be more comfortable. Getting these carpets will help all my students feel comfortable and find what works for them in terms of being able to get work done.
