About My Students

We, the students, have been working on this project for 3 months. Our school has a unique way of teaching leadership skills, and how to work with others through a project based learning system. Our project fits in with the project based learning by figuring out how to do fundraising, and we're doing this as a learning experience because multiple students in our group have ADHD and struggle with sitting instead of standing. Also, some students have problems with their backs, and the seating negatively affects their backs. All of us in the group can agree that the current chairs are affecting our own style of learning, and we would like to see new alternative seating in our school. Many students who use this classroom struggle with staying focused and staying on task, because students do not have a chance to self-regulate. Any donations we get, will greatly influence the students to be more successful in their learning. We want to make this classroom less stressful and a more enjoyable environment.

"Our school is unique in its overall educational approach, meeting the purpose of increasing choice in learning opportunities and improving student learning..."

There is standard seating right now, the tables are good for high schoolers, but there should be alternative seating for other high schoolers who will benefit from the different seating.

The alternative seating gives the students more ownership of their style of learning, more opportunities for collaborative work. Students have a chance to self-regulate, and students can decide of their seating which means they will be responsible for their learning.

"Along with that, the school will strive to identify students’ specific learning styles and then use a variety of methods to teach each skill and concept while building responsibility and ownership of education in students as they learn to find resources and develop techniques to help them learn using the methods best suited to their individual needs."

In Their Own Words

Many of the students in our school struggle to pay attention due to the uncomfortable seating. The goal of this project is to make the classrooms at our school a more welcoming environment, focused on meeting every child's needs.

With several students dealing with issues like anxiety, ADHD and other mental disorders, it can be difficult for them to sit still and focus on class. With this in mind, we have chosen to add standing desks and cushioned chairs so that students can move around and/or sit comfortably.

By learning skills of leadership through this project, we will gain knowledge in fundraising, working with others, and how to create an environment in which people are comfortable working together. This project provides a way of connecting the students of our school and giving students a goal to strive towards. These skills will help us to prepare for college and work place experiences in the future.

We attend school that is a project-based school, in which we learn to do our work hands on and in the classroom. Since the school is focused on projects, students need room to move around and use the space around them. The school, at the moment, has long tables as the desks and regular chairs.
