This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school just north of Atlanta, Georgia. They are an incredible and diverse mix of 8th graders. All of my students show a strong desire to succeed, although the method, pace, and environment they learn in varies greatly.
As we explore out alternative seating classroom, we have learned what works and what needs improving in our mastery based classroom.
Each student will benefit from the ability to create their own learning spaces as motivation and relationship building increases. I want my students to be excited about coming to class every day, because the focus will be on them and what they need to do to increase their scholastic achievements. By helping to provide alternative seating, you would be adding a huge piece to my educational puzzle.
My Project
We use The Grid Method Mastery Learning in my alternative seating classroom. Students are able to move at their own pace through the material, showing mastery along the way. My students are thriving with this style of learning and enjoying the alternative seating we have available to them.
I have seen distinct improvement in student engagement when they have a choice in their work space each day.
I have also noticed fewer disruptive behaviors as students have more say in their learning. The camping chairs will allow students to make additional choices in creating their own work environment. The headphones will assist in allowing students to be working at the level they are on without disturbing others.
