Help me give my students the necessary supplies to modify standard electronic toys and devices to allow them to be controlled with the use of a adaptive switch.
I teach art to around 100 special education students. Several of my students are considered medically fragile or have physical impairments and disabilities. Many of them use switches to perform day to day tasks and to communicate with others.
Watching them learn and communicate through the use of adaptive devices and equipment truly makes you see and believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
They're an amazing bunch of kids that deserve nothing but the best we can offer them.
My Project
Many students with physical disabilities are unable to use standard electronic toys. I plan to teach students to adapt these toys to be used with switches so that all of the children in my school are able to experience the joy of play. Through the adaptation of toys and electronic devices to be used with a switch, my students will learn how to properly use a soldering iron, wire strippers and a multi meter. They will learn about electrical circuits and current.
These are skills that they will find useful for the rest of their lives, whether it be in engineering, robotics or a trade; these skills will enable them to do so much in this world that wasn't previously possible.
