Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an inner city community school with a very diverse population. All of my students live in the neighborhood, yet some are middle class and others are homeless. Regardless of their home lives, they all come to school every day, eager to learn something new.
Though many of my students come from extremely underprivileged homes, they have fiery spirits that brighten up my classroom.
They come in daily, ready and eager to learn. They stretch me beyond my means. My students meet and exceed my expectations daily. I am blessed to be their teacher.
My Project
Kindergarten is the time to establish foundational skills upon which students will continue to build throughout their educational careers.
When students are homeless we do not want to assume they know how to play.
They have to be taught how to do so.
Using letters to make words is one of the essential skills taught during kindergarten that allow us to communicate and exchange ideas with others through reading and writing.
Students experiencing homelessness need positive peer relationships and interactions. I help my students by facilitating a sense of belonging. In order to do that, cooperative learning activities need to be provided. These alphabet tubs and sound rockets will be added to my centers in order to give students more choice. By giving choices when appropriate it will help to counter the loss of control experienced in their lives.
