Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Art supplies can provide many things for my students. They allow my students to fuel their imaginations and create amazing projects that combine the areas of art and literature. This project will allow my students to create spider puppets and use the puppet theater to perform their plays.
I have a wonderful class of second graders.
Our school is located in a highly immigrant, low-income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in their family to finish high school and hopefully college, too. My class is composed of mostly of English learners and contains several students with learning disabilities. I also mainstream autistic students into my all inclusive classroom.
My Project
These art supplies will be used to create stunning spider puppets in my classroom that will be part of our multicultural African literature unit centered around Anansi The Spider. This project will allow my students to extend their learning from reading the stories to actually creating their own Anansi The Spider puppets. Student puppets will be used to perform our own versions of the Anansi stories. The whiffle balls will create the head and body of the spider while the pipe cleaners will go through the whiffle balls to create the spider's legs. Students will utilize the geometric stickers to create the different characters in the stories.
The tabletop puppet theater will be a wonderful asset to my class because it will allow my students to create and perform puppet plays based on the stories they are reading. This project will enrich my literature units and it will enable me to bring performing arts into my classroom.
This project will allow my students to use the information they are learning in their multicultural literature unit to create beautiful African spider puppets.
It will enable my students to go beyond just reading about Anansi The Spider. These supplies will enrich my curriculum and help my students to become excited about what they are learning! I want this project to help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school.
