My students need an iPad mini, 2 iPods, and protectors to gather data on campus for digital storytelling to help build a positive school community for learning.
"Aloha Starts with Me," is our driving force to promote positive community building. Students reflect on their own behavior and then engage others in positive community building. With this technology, they will be able to impact others with digital storytelling and a student-maintained blog.
These students are a mix of military dependents and local families that blend together to make a wonderfully diverse community.
The students we specifically work with in our Aloha Warrior program are from grades 3, 4, and 5. Students sign-up and we randomly choose from each classroom to create a cross-section of what we think represents our community.
The Aloha Warrior program is in its second year and we continue to add more participants as we can accommodate them. Our goal is to provide the opportunity to all of our students, but unfortunately many of them leave within two years. Thus, the sense of community is so important to emphasize.
My Project
Technology moves at an amazing pace; and in our school, we do not have the resources to allow students to have the technology in their hands. Students will learn about technology by using it frequently, and these resources will allow more students to explore the wonderful possibilities that they hold. The iPad Mini and iPod Touch are great devices because they are smaller, easy to work with, and have great mobility. In addition, the App Store offers tons of opportunities for learning.
I am requesting these items for a specific project that requires students to capture feedback from their classrooms about our school community. Students will also do observations during recess and lunch and compile data to create a blog about the positive behaviors that they observe. They will also create videos on these devices to be shown on our blog and closed-circuit TV show that airs every week. I can't wait for them to be able to do this kind of work, and it is all possible with these devices!
Bullying is an issue in schools.
At the elementary age, it is so important to help students understand the value that they have in their community. We focus on how to be a good community member and what an individual's actions mean to a greater whole. This extends beyond the school community and can travel with our students wherever they go. To accomplish this, students must be the agents of change. Students must be the ones to take control because that is a skill in and of itself.
