Powerful gods. Jealous goddesses. Mischievous nymphs. How awesome is mythology? Unfortunately, my students only have a paragraph from a textbook to teach them about Greek and Roman mythology. Most of my students would rather sit and stare at the ceiling than read a novel. Help me change that!
I teach an amazing group of sixth graders that have yet to meet their full potential.
They are bright and have the greatest personalities. Many of our students are struggling with issues of abuse, neglect, and poverty. Some students don't get to school that often because they have to rely on the punctuality of public transportation. Half of our students receive free school lunches and breakfasts. We have a wonderful amount of diversity at our school, but that also means we have a lot of students who are English Language Learners and need extra language support.
My Project
My students need 40 copies of The Lightning Thief novel (5 in spanish), 1 audiobook version, and 40 headphones. All of my students are readers, most of them just don't know it yet! I've had success in the past with reluctant readers by introducing them to engaging, content-related read-alouds and class novels. I'm hoping to do the same with this bunch of students. I have students who need additional language support and being able to listen to the text and/or read it in their native Spanish language allows them to also enjoy the story and learn about the mythology we're studying.
Studies have shown that reading skills boost improvement in ALL areas of education, so it's really a necessary investment.
By nurturing a love of reading in these students, we'll be helping them succeed in ways that extend far beyond the classroom! Not to mention, the local library will get more traffic once these students see that books can be a fun way to learn about history.
