Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of the students at my school come from the poorest neighborhoods in the city of Boston. They are the hardest working students I've seen and they all love to learn. In my class we use technology to integrate literacy and critical thinking/ STEM.
Technology is so important to learning and these kids are eager for more!
Many of these students are immigrants to the United States and have had limited or interrupted schooling in their home countries. My goal is to help them learn English alongside their peers while simultaneously stimulating their creative minds!
My Project
I want to give my students the opportunity to build, invent, and create during media/technology class. Once a week, I meet with a majority of classes and am constantly working on finding reading materials that focuses on science or technology. Students will have time to take their own ideas and work on creations using the GoldieBlox Kits, LEGO treehouse building toy with additional brick box, action figures, blocks, magnet super set, and modular pieces from the materials I’m asking for. One class might work together to design a working pulley system, while the next week they can design a tree house (which is also something our younger students study as part of the curriculum). They will be improving their hands-on problem solving, motor skills, language skills, and self-confidence without even knowing it. I think the library will be a perfect space for my younger students to come together and be empowered to build endless amazing creations.
Women and men of color are grossly under-represented in STEM careers, so I want to help them develop an interest in these fields.
I hope to ignite a passion in them so they become doctors, architects, scientists, and astronomers. We have an opportunity to start this when they are young so they grow up believing that they can and that they have the ability to do so. Building and making is a way for some students to know something deeply. STEM will open doors of opportunity for all our students.
