Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. 98% of students qualify for free lunch and a lot live below the poverty line. Many have single parents that work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance group has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.
For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.
But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.
Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.
My Project
My students need a variety of supplies to keep their school owned band instruments in tip-top shape! This project includes 42 of the most essential, small supplies for band class! Most students use a school owned instruments because they cannot afford the rental or purchase cost for their own. However, students are responsible for their instrument for the year. These supplies will help ensure that my students' instruments are well maintained and continue to stay in good, working order. At the end of each year, instruments are cleaned and sterilized and ready to be handed off to a new student the following year. These supplies will help teach my students the responsibility of maintaining their instruments both for their own success, and for the success of future students.
Just like a car, instruments need regular maintenance and TLC.
We are currently running low on these supplies in my classroom. This project will help us purchase the necessary oils and grease for brass and woodwind instruments, swabs to remove the moisture from the pads of woodwinds and preserve their longevity, reeds for continued playing and use, and replacement ligatures for when accidents happen with small parts! My students work really hard to maintain their instruments, but that becomes more of a challenge when we don't have the necessary supplies to do so! Regular maintenance helps reduce the risk of more costly repairs down the line. These small supplies will help us ensure that our equipment is used and enjoyed by many students for years to come!
