My students need support as they navigate a very stressful world at times! I selected books like I Matter, I am Yoga, and The Way I Act to help us talk about healthy ways to manage our emotions!
I have had the pleasure of being our fabulous school district's elementary school guidance counselor for many years. Throughout the years I have carried many roles with this title, but my favorite role is working with our amazing students. Our school houses over 400 students in grades preschool through fourth. Many of them come to our school lacking social and emotional skills. In addition to that, many of them come to school on a daily without their basic needs being met. It is, without doubt, the most rewarding job I could have ever asked for to be able to assist and help these students, as well as all of the students in my district.
Over 70% of our students come from low-income households, but that does not stop them from being some of the most friendly, positive, and hardworking students.
Throughout the day, I am able to work with the students helping them to enroll, get acquainted with the school, offer them guidance and support in terms of academic, personal, parental, and social pressures, as well as advocate for their well being. In addition to that, I get help students process problems and plan goals of action.
My Project
These books were thoughtfully selected to help elementary students recognize that its ok to have emotions, thoughts and to feel certain ways, but in those moments there are some positive ways to handle those emotions that will help you and those around you to grow and learn!
I desire for my students to be in control over their thoughts and emotions and not to let them control the child!
If I can help them understand how to self regulate at a young age it will help in the years and generations to come!
I Matter, I am Yoga, and The Way I Act are some of the amazing books I will be able to share with my students, my kids, on the beautiful red carpet that I requested during our lessons and help make a difference in their lives!
