Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently we created a "museum" at our school and invited other classrooms to visit. One group of my students put on a puppet show as part of the museum experience. It was a big hit!
My fifth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.
Some of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, some are gifted, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
My Project
The experience of staging a puppet show really energized my students. They created a stage out of tri-fold cardboard and paint, and they crafted puppets out of modeling clay. After two weeks of performances, though, the cardboard has gotten beaten up, and now the stage doesn't stand on its own.
My students would love to have a "real" puppet theater made out of wood. The puppet theater I am requesting has curtains, a marquee, and can stand on its own. My students also are asking for some puppets to get them going.
With this new puppet theater, my motivated students will be able to stage a show without having to worry about the stage falling over.
They will be able to perform for dozens of other students at our school. Thanks to your generous donation, all the world will be their stage. My students and I thank you!
