My students need books to meet Common Core Standards.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
I teach in an urban school where violence in the community is a norm. Mm biggest challenge as a reading teacher is to engage them in reading.
My students live in the south side of Chicago where gangs and shootings are a norm.
They thrive on books that they can relate to, books in urban settings and African American characters whom they can relate to. "Monster" is about a boy who hangs around with the wrong crowd and is caught being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is then tried for a crime he did not commit.
Almost every child in my class has a parent or sibling in jail. This book will help me teach them how choices can affect their lives.
The books will be used to meet the Common Core Standards of reading and writing. They will have debates and build an understanding of how the judicial system works. The book will be the main source, integrated with articles and issues of past as well as current events.
The books will help change my students' lives for the better by teaching them that who they hang around and the choices they make can affect them the rest of their lives.
It will also help them improve their reading comprehension, make connections, and compare texts and genres.
