Help me give my students the ability to communicate using assistive technology. The communication device and switches will provide my students with opportunities to make requests and choices throughout their school day.
Our school is a K-6 elementary building in the beautiful farmlands of Lancaster County, PA. Although our students have a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, we provide all students with a strong education to prepare them for life. One of my favorite things about our school is how welcoming and inclusive it is to students of all abilities. I teach an amazing group of students who have a special purpose in life! My students are in grades K-2 and are differently abled than typically developing students. Our classroom is considered a Multiple Disabilities Support classroom due to my students' cognitive, medical and physical needs.
My students are faced with a variety of physical and cognitive challenges, but that does not stop them from coming to school and giving it their all each and every day!
As a classroom teacher combined with our therapists, support staff, and families we work together as a team to improve our students' abilities to become the best, most independent students they can be. My students motivate me each and every day to become a better teacher and person. To see their drive even though they are faced with medical, physical, and cognitive difficulties is so inspiring.
The students in my classroom have multiple disabilities including physical, cognitive, and communication needs. By providing my students with opportunities to communicate throughout the school day, they are empowered and are increasing their independence. Switches can be used to make requests, participate in lessons, and turn toys and devices on and off.
I believe that all students deserve to have a voice and to have control over their environment.
Providing students with these opportunities will allow me to help develop their communication skills and understanding of cause and effect skills. These switches will be used throughout our school day to increase the participation and communication skills of all students.
