Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a special education teacher, one of my roles is to help make learning more accessible to my students. Imagine sitting in a class of 30 other students trying to focus when you have been diagnosed with ADHD of have sensory processing disorder.
I am lucky to work with some of the hardest working students in the Bronx.
I am inspired by their drive to succeed and overcome obstacles every day. They are committed to working hard and doing what it takes to go to competitive high schools and college. They live with a wide range of disabilities, from emotional disturbance to ADHD to learning disabilities. They spend the majority of their days sitting in large classes held to high expectations. They want to be successful, but they often don't have the tools to maximize their potential in the classroom.
My Project
In order to level the playing field, I need tools to support my students in class. I am requesting a variety of materials to meet the individual needs of students. Some of these materials include:
-Theraputty and sensory balls: Students with ADHD often focus better in class if they can be active. Theraputty and sensory balls allow students to subtly move during class while still focusing on the lesson.
-Pencil grips: Pencil grips support students who struggle with fine motor control.
-Graph paper: Graph paper assists students with learning disabilities in math class. They are able to keep their work organized.
-Reading trackers: Reading trackers highlight one line of text at a time so students can focus on reading without being overwhelmed.
These tools for differentiation are going to exponentially increase the amount of learning that happens in all of our classrooms.
Our students with special needs are going to be able to develop the skills necessary to be successful in high school, college, and the working world.
