Help me give my students a large Big Red Adapted switch and a variety of adapted toys to use with the switch, which will give them the opportunity and ability to interact with their environment.
I currently teach young children who have multiple disabilities and are medically fragile. My students require maximum assistance to complete most activities. I use a modified curriculum aligned to our state standards, adapting activities and materials to go along with the curriculum.
The focus in the classroom is on communication and developing skills that will benefit as they get older, while assisting with any medical and/or physical needs they have in the classroom.
It is pure joy watching them smile when they realize they "got it."
My Project
Everyone learns through play, and it is important to a child's development and learning. Children with disabilities understand and discover the world differently from children without disabilities. Using the Big Red adapted switch to operate the Beat-Bo adapted switch toy, student will be increasing their understanding of cause and effect: "If I press this switch, something will happen"—and increase auditory development. By having three different toys to select from, the students will be working on communication, like learning how to match objects to pictures. It gives them an opportunity to make choices, giving them control over their environment.
The donation of accessible toys will let my students with disabilities interact with the world in a way that makes sense.
It will enhance their learning while helping to develop a sense of control over their environment and increased self-esteem.
