Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are eager learners who have a lot to share! They come from diverse backgrounds and speak many languages. First grade is an exciting year, as for many of them it is the year when they first learn to really read. For many of these young learners they have the added challenge of learning to speak the language while simultaneously learning to read it, but they are up for the challenge!
My students come from a high poverty area, but that doesn't stop their enthusiasm for learning or their desire to grow.
We engage in daily whole and small group lessons, and I have the added benefit of co-teaching with an ESOL teacher to support my English Language Learners (ELLs) in our classroom. We strive to build a learning community in our classroom.
My Project
We currently have a small rug that doesn't have enough room for the entire class to fit at once. We use the space throughout the day when we gather as a whole class and when small groups of students work together with a teacher or with one another.
We would love a rug that invites our entire learning community to join the learning together!
We'd like space to move, do math, to listen to stories and to have conversations. We would like to be able to gather around as a learning community and have a central place in the classroom that has a place for everyone.
This is a project that will last for years to come so the benefit will be more than just this year's class of children.
