Forty years ago, Apple was just a fruit. Twenty years ago, Google was just a funny word. Did you know that over half of the jobs that current pre-kindergarten students will hold when they graduate high school in 2033 don't even exist yet?
I work as the computer lab teacher in a great, diverse, and effective school.
Here, we have a mix of students who live locally, within walking distance, and many others who travel by school bus, city bus, and private van service to come to our school daily.
We have general education classes, special education services, and students who have been identified as gifted and talented. Our students were born in this country or overseas. I teach students with professional parents and students who rely on governement assistance to live and eat. Every one of these students are "my kids".
My Project
Each week, students from Pre-K through 5th grade come to my computer lab to learn everything from basic computer terminology, to how to print, to searching the web, to computer programming. What my students really need right now is an HP all-in-one desktop computer. My students each have an iMac desktop to work on in the lab, but their classrooms have PC-based computers. Often, they will bring in work started in their room, however they can't continue the work on the Mac OS platform because certain programs are not available.
The boys and girls will be using programs including MS Paint and MS Publisher to create publications, which are only available on Windows-based computers.
If this project is funded, over 550 students will have access to a new HP computer.
