Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are entering a critical part of their educational career. I want to set them on a path for college readiness. My scholars are growing up in a low-income area; that does not predict their educational trajectory. My scholars work hard and enter the classroom each day with a new sense of urgency that shows that they are truly exhibiting what it means to be college-ready at this young age! I have a class of 26 brilliant scholars. They are researchers, mathematicians, scientists, authors, historians, etc. My students are the future of our city, and members of our future society. Every day they come into my classroom excited to learn, and ready to take on the challenges I have set up for them. These youngsters deserve the absolute best education they can get, and they deserve to be supported in every way possible in the most important year of their educational career.
My Project
My scholars find so much joy in having time to sit down and read a book. Like any class, my class is full of mixed personalities. They all have different strengths and different experiences that they bring to the table. However, this year, we have grown together in our heart for reading. It is so easy for my baby bulldog scholars to get caught up in a good book.
I am wanting to provide them with new books this Christmas as a special treat to extend our classroom library.
As most of my scholars (75%) are from low-income families, they have very limited access to books at home. It is the greatest privilege and honor that I have to expose them to all types of books at school. In this project, I am hoping to bring more fiction and non-fiction books to the classroom. As an IB school, my scholars embody the learning profile and attitude of being reflective, curious, and they are certainly thinkers. With these books within their grasp, they will be able to ask more questions about the world around them and find out more through their reading.
