This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We ARE mathematicians! The students at my school come with great expectations daily. I teach at a Title I school in SC where more than 80% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite many hardships, our students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to succeed in all areas at school, and they come to school ready for any challenge set before them.
My students are fired up about math!
Many students love using manipulative. They know it helps them move from the concrete to the abstract aspect of learning about numbers! That's where you can help!
My Project
Manipulatives not only allow students to construct their own cognitive models for abstract mathematical ideas and processes, they also provide a common language with which to communicate these models to the teacher and other students.
These base ten blocks and paper will allow my students to explore math in many different ways.
They will be able to converse in groups how numbers are related and different ways to arrive at the same answer to a problem. These manipulatives will also allow my students to stay engaged during lessons and math centers. Having students use manipulative holds them accountable for their own learning because they will have to explain their thinking and reasoning behind decisions made, which is truly when learning takes place.
