This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in Maryland where all students qualify for free/reduced-price lunches. Despite the challenging circumstances, these students face outside of school, they enter the classroom excited and ready to explore all the world has to offer them.
Kindergarten is the first year of school for the majority of my students so it is important that they are able to develop a love of learning!
In kindergarten, they also need to build a strong academic foundation in order to be prepared for the academic challenges they will face throughout elementary school and beyond. Creating this foundation will allow them to have the tools to become anything they dream to be.
My Project
This is a troubling time for our Nation's schools and the students they serve. Currently, my school is closed for two weeks, but this is a fluid, ever changing situation that may lead to students being at home for a longer amount of time.
Many of my students are likely to face adversity in the upcoming weeks as their parents face the challenge in meeting the basic needs of their children.
Each of our families will be provided a work packet to use during the closure. However, this is not sufficient to meet the needs of many of my students, who are already academically behind their more affluent peers.
I am requesting a variety of emergent readers that students will find engaging, including comics, Paw Patrol, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Each student will be able to receive 5 books on their reading level so that they can practice their reading strategies and comprehension skills at home. Additionally, I hope to foster a love of reading in my students.
At the beginning of the year I was able to provide my students with many math manipulatives. The requested math workbooks will allow students to practice their math skill with some guidance, while using the math manipulatives they already have at home.
The pencils, pencil sharpeners, and crayons will support students' in their math as well as writing at home, which is a critical skill in kindergarten.
