Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are located just North of the University of Southern California. We serve many low income students who are second languages learners. We have many students who are new to the country and in some cases are new to having an education. Our charter academy has a very high graduation rate despite the many physical, economic, social, and psychological challenges our students and families face. All of our students are taught in dual languages (English and Spanish) and receive music, art, dance, PE, and STEM each week throughout their education. Any help you provide is greatly appreciated. Thank You.
My Project
Our students love music and always look forward to their time in the music room. We have accomplished so much this year, in spite of the hardships many of these students face daily. The students sing songs that focus on various musical concepts and expand their knowledge of cultures other than their own. The primary students enjoy adding accompaniments to the stories and songs we do in class. Currently we only have 6 Orff Instruments (3 Xylophones and 3 Metallophones) and even when we rotate groups to play the time on the instruments is very limited.
Having more mallets will allow us to have 2 students per instrument and enable more students to be actively engaged in the music lessons.
The more students we have playing the instruments the more we can progress. I know the students will appreciate having more opportunities to experience the joy of music making with the instruments we have.
