We need to write! I have a handful of students in my fifth grade class that are writing on or below a second grade level. By February these students need to score AT LEAST a 4 on the TCAP writing assessment in order to be considered passing.
I work in a second year charter school.
Resources for my classroom and for my students are extremely limited. Also, 99% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, a federal designation that indicates high-poverty. Despite their limited resources, my 5th graders are some of the brightest, most creative and innovative students I have ever met. These students are passionate about learning and eager for every new opportunity.
My Project
Part of the fifth grade curriculum in the state of Tennessee is scoring at least a 4 on the state writing test in February. Out of my 43 students I have a handful who can barley spell sight words, much less write a complete sentence. These magnetic words and letters would allow them to practice simple spelling and sentence building techniques. The workbook would also be used in order for me to differentiate my writing instruction so that during writing class they are also working on their writing at their level rather than becoming frustrated.
I am a strong believer that every child can learn.
I am not discouraged by how far behind my students are, but only more motivated and passionate about their learning capabilities and growth potential. My students are just as capable as any other student in the school system. Given a passionate teacher and more resources these students can and WILL learn!
