I teach a wide range of students from Honors English students who have a passion for reading & writing to a Special Education co-taught class with various reading abilities.
My students have diverse backgrounds with a number of different spoken languages, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, LGBTQ representations, and family cultures.
They're hard-workers, bright smiles, and determined kids. They deserve to see themselves represented in our classroom library. Help me give my students Young Adult books that show them that not all characters are white & straight, so they can seem themselves in the writing.
I want to show ALL of my students that they are represented in literature; that their story is important and one worth telling. I want my diverse students to find themselves in a story and be able to relate to it. There's nothing better than finding a book that you can see yourself in, that you feel connected to. Many students aren't able to make that connection until they are given a diverse classroom library that is inclusive of all genders, races, sexual orientations, religions, and backgrounds. I want my students to love reading because it is an escape for them, and it provides a sense of comfort to find themselves in a book-showing them that they aren't alone.
