Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a classroom of students with Special Needs, ranging from mild to severe needs. In our classroom, the students work hard to achieve their academic standards, but also in the very important area of social skills development. Since all of these children experience difficulties with speech and language, their abilities in the arena of social interaction tend to require intensive support.
The Leap Pad literacy series, entitled "All Around Me", takes a closer look into the child's self-awareness, home, school, neighborhood, animals and other people that they encounter on a daily basis. Increasing their awareness of others and of what happens in a variety of environmental settings will better prepare them for the "real world". They can explore these books and have opportunities to apply those new skills within their environment.
Being socially and environmentally aware is a crucial step to their successful integration into society. If they are able to hear about it, act it out, and practice within our classroom setting and on the school playground, they will be more likely to show success in the community where they live.
It is my job to ensure that my students have a comfort level when interacting with peers and adults, both at school and at home. They will build a sense of responsibility for pet care, helping others in need and keeping nature beautiful and pristine, the way it was meant to be.
This book series will also benefit my class in the areas of early literacy, vocabulary development, literary response, comprehension, grammar, sentence structure and phonological awareness. Upon review of these materials, I am sure any donor will see the immediate benefit to a Special Day Class, both academically and socially!
We already hav the Leap Pad units--now we just need the interactive book series.
