Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Kindergarten through Second grade students on the autism spectrum are superheroes. We are located in Hunts Point; the industrial and most improvised area of the South Bronx, NY. In self-contained special education classes our superheroes are bussed in from all over the Bronx and work to overcome the struggles of autism and continuous environmental trauma. As an extended family, we are dedicated to providing all of the students a learning environment which meets their academic and social needs through differentiated methods of instruction. Temple Grandin stated "You have got to keep autistic children engaged with the world. You cannot let them tune out." We are continuously helping our students with autism and their families engage with the world around them.
All about the superhero in me, our students with autism are learning that they all have a super power that makes them special.
Our goal is provide students with a portal to which they can have access to real world experiences and discover that they are "different, not less", with special abilities that allow them to see and experience the world differently. To accomplish this, we strive to provide access to challenging experiences aligned with Common Core Learning Standards.
My Project
The iPads will help our special students on the autism spectrum realize their super power through access of many applications. Students with autism have special abilities which surface with the interaction of technology such as iPads. Many of our students are limited verbally and will use the iPads to communicate their needs and wants, engage with their friends, family members and the world around them. Our students also have difficulty with motor planning, the iPads will help them write and type to express their thoughts. As visual learners, the iPads will provide our students access to the internet where they can utilize pictures, videos and music to expand their learning experiences.
iPads are portals to the world and provide our students with endless learning opportunities and skills which will prepare them for world.
It is amazing when a student with autism forms a connection and becomes more engaged through interaction with an iPad. Their abilities surface and they are motivated to actively participate in more rigorous learning experiences.
