Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our orchestra class is located in a small, rural town in Arizona. The community here is very close and supportive. Since I have started teaching orchestra here, the program has shown me how much the orchestra program means to kids, their families, and the community here. Some unexpected challenges include finding enough playable instruments of suitable size to fit all of the students that wanted to enroll in orchestra and acquiring instruments to allow as many students to participate in orchestra as they would like.
The students in our orchestra class often include a large percentage of the student body officers, math team, and active athletes.
Our students are great leaders and hard workers. Despite our deficit compared to certain suburban and urban resources (like available private music teachers and nearby youth symphony programs), we have had students be accepted into State Orchestra Festivals and participate in traveling orchestra festivals.
My Project
Young musicians need instruments their size. Imagine the excitement a child feels when they finally get the chance to play the most important instrument in the orchestra - the double bass. They get to class only to find that they cannot even reach the top of the instrument, where their hand and fingers push the massive strings down. The disappointment pulls all the enthusiasm down from their heart, out through their toes. BUT you can empower their teacher to say, "Hey, don't worry. We've got your back. Here we have a bass that is your size. One you can reach. And it sounds good."
A double bass at the right size can make all the difference to a child that wants to work hard at making good, meaningful music.
