My 5th and 6th graders are just like all other 10-12 year olds: they’re creative, curious, and energetic. They want to explore anything and everything in their reach and sight!
Unfortunately, one of the impacts of high stakes testing is the elimination of recess and electives so students can have more time in class.
I work in an urban charter school with the rigorous mission to send 100% of our students to college (and we do). As a result, we have a longer day that demands more of their focused attention. Furthermore, many of my students get home late at night and don’t have the free time to participate in after school sports or just run around the neighborhood. Our building is housed in a converted factory. We have no playground. We don’t even have a proper gym, which makes it nearly impossible to give my students the movement breaks they deserve. Without an outlet to release their energy in a productive and playful manner, children manifest negative behaviors in cramped hallways and crowded classrooms.
My Project
Neuroscientists and child development researchers have repeatedly proven the links between exercise and cognition. To parents and teachers, it’s just common sense. Movement truly primes the brain for learning. In addition to being growing children, many of my students have diagnoses such as ADHD, Autism and processing disorders that impact their academic functioning and memory. Although they sit, stand, and move around the room in my class, their attention is often divided and they fidget constantly. I envision students having a positive outlet for movement and expression.
General Patton once said that “An active mind cannot exist in an inactive body.” I want my students to channel their unbridled energy while problem solving, discussing and experimenting.
Whether they are feverishly pedaling while writing, bouncing while reading, or balancing while brainstorming, all my students will benefit from sensory stimulation. Resistance bands, wobble cushions, and peddling devices will increase engagement and productivity.
