All About That Bass...Clarinet!

My students need a bass clarinet to help make our band sound complete. Without these "low" sounding instruments, our band sounds incomplete. Help us sound like a full band!

My Students

My band students are troopers! They do a lot with very little resources. They have battled through a revolving door of teachers, a tiny band room, and a limited amount of instruments to use.

Our band is currently made up of mostly clarinets and flutes, and therefore sounds very empty, even when students are all doing their best and playing out.

We just don't have the harmony element that comes from the low woodwind instruments that our band needs. My band's ability to play with incredible passion and rigor is constantly surprising me. We don't get to meet at school as much as most band programs, so students have to put in more time at home to become incredible, and my students really take that responsibility and run with it.

My Project

With many students already proficient at playing clarinet, I would love to switch some of them over to bass clarinet as a challenge and as a reward. Plus, it would make us sound loads better because of the depth of sound it would give us. These low instruments are a driving force in a band and really necessary to fill out our sound.

When I record our group in class and we listen back to it, the kids always remark about how we sound different than the recording because we don't have the "bass line" that the bands in the recordings do.

Not having these instruments also makes it so some pieces of music can't be chosen because the low instruments are playing a really important role in that particular piece.

Many times I tell my bands, "we are great right now, but we can be amazing" and this instrument would help us get to that level. Their excitement about this project is already huge and they are hoping for this instrument for their band experience and for the experience of the band students to come.
