I am the high school boys basketball coach at a Title I rural school district, where approximately half of our population is free/reduced lunch.
Our district is a very rural, low-income school, that originated in 1954 and serves 4 neighboring communities, all coming together in just one building to make up approximately 325 students PK through 12th grade.
Our boys' basketball players are very hard workers. We are a small school and it's important to us that they play multiple sports. The boys not only work and train for athletics year-round, but they also work at other jobs in the offseason. Add that on top of maintaining their grades in school and they are putting in a lot of time and hard work.
My Project
Every 5 years our school purchases new uniforms for our basketball team. Due to Covid and spring shutdowns, our school budgets were cut and our booster club lost fundraising opportunities. Due to this, we were unable to purchase travel gear for our basketball team.
A team should like a team.
It is awesome to see guys who look alike off the field too. Watching our basketball team walk around the school or walk into a gym and look-alike is a huge confidence boost for them. They feel like they belong to something bigger than themselves.
