My students need to get excited about reading! I will make reading boats out of these totes. Kids will be able to climb aboard, read, and have fun doing it.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an economically disadvantaged, inner-city school. Several of my students are homeless; they go from relative to relative moving every few weeks. A typical student comes to my classroom with very little knowledge of letters and sounds. Many have no books in their home. Most cannot count to 15, let alone write those numbers. Some have never even held a pencil!
Forget what you've heard, Flint children are resilient and strong!
They are loving and excited to learn. Flint children are capable and deserve the same chance to excel.
My Project
Reading is so important. Yet, many of my students do not see reading as a treasure. I aim to change that! I desire to make reading boats from these totes. This will build excitement and increase the amount of time my students stay engaged with a good book.
Reading boats will have children begging for independent reading time.
These will be boats that the kids can climb into, sit against a comfy cushion and sail away into a good book. The lids will be made into the top deck of the boat, giving the boat a secure and cozy feel.
