Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a No Excuses University (NEU) school, where each classroom has chosen a college to promote with college-themed decor, college chants, and the promotion of the idea that college is an attainable option for all, if they so choose.
My fifth grade San Diego State Aztecs are today's scholars and tomorrow's leaders who are curious, enthusiastic, creative, and eager to immerse themselves in any kind of challenge!
Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship are character traits my students learn about at our school, in addition to academics, and we practice making positive human connections with daily choices that support these six Pillars of Character. In fact, students’ ‘ticket’ into class each morning is to return my “good morning” greeting while making eye contact with me, which helps to start each day on a positive note. I also practice making a minimum of three interactions with each student daily to establish and maintain our positive classroom community. This can be challenging with 34 students, and it is also extremely essential.
My Project
From the moment you walk into our classroom, it is apparent that the wizarding world of Harry Potter is embraced here. There is a Harry Potter display, complete with Harry’s glasses, a cauldron, quill pens and ink, and Hedwig, a snowy white owl. Our classroom library has had multiple copies from the Harry Potter series come and go through the years, all paperback editions that have been well-loved, and I know this hardcover set will withstand the test of time so that many more students will be able to experience the fascinating world of Harry Potter.
