Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school in an urban area of Los Angeles. Nearly one hundred percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. When the current health crisis hit, many of our students lacked the basic tools for learning at home: computers or tablets, an internet connection, and a stable, consistent routine for completing their work. The first month of distance learning was spent trying to work through some of those challenges.
The students have stepped up to the challenge and are learning how to complete new tasks each day.
They are becoming more self-sufficient as they tackle the various online assignments. However, we lack materials and resources that are adaptable to being completed online by students who have little to no experience with this type of learning.
My Project
My students were thrown into distance learning with no preparation. Remote education is a vastly different experience from the traditional classroom learning we are accustomed to, and both the students and I have had to learn as we go.
Materials that are designed for online education would help us all as we navigate these uncharted waters.
Trying to modify my usual materials into something that the students can make sense of online is challenging and frustrating for all of us. Many talented and creative teachers have already developed resources that they sell on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. I'm requesting a gift certificate to purchase math, language arts, science, and social studies materials that I can use online as we close out the school year.
