Most of my students qualify to receive free or reduced priced meals. They range from PreKindergarten to First grade. The classes are self contained with only one teacher per class. The students are have shown a high interest in STEM activities and they are eager to to learn.
One class of students is an inclusion class of 15 students, with half of the students with a variety of diagnosed behaviors.
The students attend full day school and some are in a before and after school program that offers little or no STEM related activities.
My Project
The hands-on learning approach is about providing students with opportunities to experiment with their surroundings as a form of problem solving through coding. It is about creativity and collaboration, motivation and self-direction. It is about improvisation and discovery, and playful learning experiences with real-world relevance.
We are requesting two LEGO Coding Express kits.
The unique combination of building with the familiar LEGO bricks, using easy-to-use coding software and engaging curriculum relevant STEM challenges, makes coding fun and relevant for elementary and middle school students. Basically, everything you need to help every student to succeed at STEM through coding. We want to expose students to coding as it will teach them logical thinking and reasoning, and encourage different methods of communication.
Learning to code with this product will build on a variety of skills in the classroom. It will increase cognitive skills through problem solving and flexible thinking, build effective strategies, follow rules; emotional skills, for self confidence, self control and refection, perseverance, understanding, expressing, and regulating emotions; social skills for collaboration and communication, understanding perspectives; creative skills by using representations, making new associations, transformation of new ideas and use of symbols; physical skills for balance, movement and spatial understanding.
