Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a low socio-economic school where most of my students predominantly speak Spanish. My students are at varying levels of academic ability. Some students read at a kindergarten level and up while a few students read at a fourth grade level.
After Hurricanes Irma, Harvey, and Maria, many families from Hurricane-ravaged Caribbean countries, especially Puerto Rico, have migrated to my high-Hispanic/ELL population school, staying with relatives and loved ones as they transition to the US.
A plethora of our parents are not in a position to afford school supplies for their children, but value their child's education. Many of their parents work two jobs and have a difficult time taking them to the library to get books on their reading levels. In most cases, their parents are Spanish speaking and can not read with them at home.
Several of my students have a learning disability and lack confidence in reading. I would like for them to develop a love of reading.
My Project
Picture this...students engaged, learning, and participating in small group guided reading. These carefully selected materials will help my student gain reading comprehension confidence in small group by using high-interest texts.
My class will be able to choose from a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts on topics they often wonder about on a daily basis.
As their reading comprehension improves their knowledge on a variety of topics will increase. In turn, my students' reading stamina will improve which will allow them to successfully pass their grade level standards. These texts will be exactly what my students who are generally below level need.
