Our class sizes are big and we have an area behind our rooms known as “the backyard”. We would love to get some fun chairs, carpets etc. for all our 4th grade students to spread out and work on projects together, read or play games. Kids love to be able to have flex seating and make choices.
At my school, we strive to impact, educate, and inspire all our students.
Our amazing school is located in Monticello, MN. Many of our students not only come from diverse backgrounds, but are English Language Learners.
Our school offers rigorous curriculum and a STEM program which promotes project-based, hands-on learning opportunities to create a bridge between what they are learning and application; the goal being to provide these invaluable experiences for our students on a daily basis. Many times the students are sitting on the floor and would like chairs, tables or carpets to be in our back commons to work. I find that when students have a choice in their seating and they are not in the traditional desk and chair they take a more active roll in their learning.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently our students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our 4th grade backyard, such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
Our students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive with their peers when they are given a choice seating and can spread out in the backyard!
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desk/higher tables but will still allow some movement. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The comfy floor seats and the beanbag chair will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
I have seen how choice can positively affect our students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
