Hello! I am a 2nd grade teacher in the Compton Unified School District. We are a Title I School in which all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino.
My hope is to get all of my students to read at a proficient level by the end of the school year. In order to help them reach this goal, aside from the reading strategies taught inside the class, is to help them ignite their passion for reading. My students need more than the reading passages from the state-provided reading curriculum to challenge them further in reading. I’ve realized their passion for reading must be ignited within the classroom as early as 2nd grade.
I want to encourage my little 2nd grade students to read along with the class set of books of H.B. Homzie’s Alien Clones from Outer Space: Two Heads are Better than One (Part 1) & Who Let the Dog’s Out? (Part 2). I want to help them visualize the wacky events of this imaginative book together as a class. I want to stir up grand discussions about the fictional characters that make them laugh out loud as we read along. It is a priceless moment to see the students' excitement while reading these books.
With the help from you, I am hoping to broaden the class library to include this series. I am requesting a class set of H.B. Homzie’s Alien Clones from Outer Space: Who Let the Dog’s Out?” (Part 2). Please, help my students not only become proficient readers but also reading fanatics!!!
