This particular group of students consists of children with severe disabilities. They have music class once per week and we work on playing rhythm instruments and doing movement to music. Because they are all virtually non-verbal, singing is not a viable activity so we focus on other ways to perform.
Music is a universal language despite one's abilities or disabilities.
These children are unique individuals who, collectively, make up a beautiful ensemble and we work to make lovely music together.
My Project
Gripping a mallet to play a drum is something that most can do easily, but my special friends sometimes need extra help. Providing these children with instruments that are easy to grip and hold helps them be more participatory during class. Also, movement activities are much more exciting when you add in scarves or ribbons.
Music class is an opportunity for everyone to shine - including those with special needs.
I want each child to be successful in music making regardless of his or her abilities.
All of the items on the list will contribute greatly to my special musicians - my Wonderband! Budding performers need to be nurtured and provided with the tools to make them successful.
