Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach several classes of Algebra in SDAIE instruction, which means Specifically Designed Academic Instruction in English. For most middle school students (grades 7/8), the subject of Algebra is as foreign to them as studying a new foreign language. Even though 3 of my 5 classes are SDAIE instruction, all my students can benefit from SDAIE strategies because our district test scores in math rank far below basic when compared to the State Standards. The state says SDAIE students needs lots of visual aids to understand the English translation for many of the Algebra concepts I teach. However, due to the many concepts in Algebra, I am not able to adequately cover for the SDAIE student because of the pacing requirements necessary for meeting the California State Standards in Algebra by the end of the school year. Therefore, to aid my SDAIE students specifically, and all my students in general, I would like to convert concepts that I am not able to adequately cover into multi-media presentations. For the SDAIE students, the visuals (with music) that I can create through my multi-media presentations will significantly enhance their learning experience, as I produce 3-5 minute multi-media presentations on Algebra concepts where I can embed them within my instruction on a regular basis, repeatedly over time, rather than relying on a simple introduction of the concept in a lesson during one class period. I have one presentation ready to go on prime and composite numbers. I am only able to introduce these two concepts to my SDAIE students when we work with fractions, but with my multi-media presentation I can embed instruction on prime & composite numbers, into my regular instruction as we are learning how to simplify fractions when working with Algebra functions. I have been trained in computer-designed multi-media instruction, but have never been supplied with the equipment to utilize this teaching tool in the classroom. I need a projector, blank CDs, a projector screen, software, cartoon characters, and hip hop music tracks that students can relate to, as well as back up drives.
