"Algebra: It's what you need for college!"
This is the motto for my high school algebra students this year. Although they are faced with a variety of challenges, my students have proved that they are motivated, driven, and determined to beat the odds.
My students are coming from low-income, low-performing middle schools that failed to prepare them with the basic skills necessary for college preparatory mathematics. This unfortunate reality, which is true for too many of California's high school students, is further complicated by the fact that my students have special-needs but do not have access to the necessary assistive technology that can accommodate their learning styles.
A simple tool like the calculator can significantly reduce a child's fear and anxiety regarding math. While I do agree that my students need to continue practicing and honing their basic math skills, I firmly believe that it is my duty to also prepare them for higher-level math, which is often dependent on a calculator. This is why I would like to provide them with the Casio Fraction Mate calculator to use during class.
This is the same calculator that I used as a student many years ago and I lent it to one of my current students this year who was struggling to stay focused in my class. I was shocked to see the difference a small electronic device made in his participation and mastery. His entire demeanor was different in class. Now he is always on-task and following along with class examples. When I approached him for some follow-up, he responded that he always "messed up" with numbers and never thought he could do algebra, but now he is confident in his abilities and has a new commitment to even improve his arithmetic skills!
These calculators will allow students to begin thinking critically in algebra. My students are cognitively ready for higher-level math and I no longer want simple arithmetic errors to hold them behind.
